Slayer, In Flames, Children of Bodom, Thine Eyes Bleed - Unholy Alliance Tour 2006: Preaching To The Perverted
The kick-off date for the European version of Slayer’s Unholy Alliance tour was in our little country, and of course we had some people present there. Unfortunately we all missed Thine Eyes Bleed and Lamb Of God wasn’t included in Holland, but the rest has been witnessed and reviewed below for your reading pleasure. Enjoy!
Finnish melodic death metallers Children of Bodom entered the stage as the second band of that night. I have seen this band a couple of times before and every single time in Holland their show and sound was horrible. To be honest I was impressed by the quality of their set when I saw them in Hungary 2 years ago. In Den Bosch the band played incredibly well. Normally the Slayer support acts got 'problems' with sound and light but this time it was good enough. The band played a decent 40 minute set and the audience responded really well (no non-stop Slayer shouting this time) with a mosh pit and loads of horns in the front. After three songs in the front I headed back to watch the rest of the show near the PA system. And as usual the sound was amazing over there, time for a beer and a 'Unox broodje'. Songs like ‘Hatebreeder’ and ‘Follow the Reaper’ were played and the solos of both the guitar and keyboards sounded impressively good in the venue. This might have been the first real good Children of Bodom show I have seen in the Netherlands and I sure didn’t expect sound to be this good in a venue like this. One thing is for sure, I am going to add more of this band to my album collection!

After seeing a couple of In Flames shows I noticed that they always have the same sucky live sound, as tonight was again the case. All the instruments just don’t sound clear enough to do right to the fantastic songs and capabilities of In Flames; their live performance just misses the forcefullness of the CD’s. Nevertheless songs like ‘Trigger’ and ‘Cloud Connected’ simply stay awesome to hear live, but I must say that I’m a bit fed up with the jumping part of ‘Only for the Weak’. It’s too bad that there isn’t too much of a surprise element in their show. I also think that the flashy disco lights on the backline don’t contribute anything to the music; in fact it only makes it weaker. Can I name a good point of the show? Well, I sure had a good laugh when a Heineken employee with a big crate of beer on his back ended up in the pit! But don’t get me wrong; In Flames did put up a good show as they always do and I’m sure that kids who saw them live for the first time had a great time, but for people with a little more experience it’s just a bit disappointing.

For starters, Slayer had done something amazing with their speakers; they had build two gigantic upside down crosses from Marshalls, which made the atmosphere that much more anti-Christian. They opened the set with ‘South Of Heaven’, which set the right tone for the rest of the show. The band was playing awesome, giving the crowd what they wanted with a very nice sound. Especially the drums were pounding like mad, Dave Lombardo sounded like he was on fire! I must add that he also was the most impressing musician of the four maniacs. Tom Araya on the other hand, was again suffering from vocal problems which could clearly be noticed during some tracks. How can he not scream ‘waaaaaaaaaaar ‘ during ‘War Ensemble’!?! Unheard of!
Still, it was my first metal show in three weeks or so, and I was already suffering from too much aggression in my body, so I was very happy with this show. I moshed my ass off, like one is supposed to at a Slayer show. We were treated to only two new tracks, ‘The Eyes Of The Insane’ and the already cult ‘Cult’. In the end I was very satisfied on a personal level, but I think that the vocals won't last that long anymore. Hell, as long as I can headbang myself to death with ‘Raining Blood’, ‘Postmortem’ and 'Angel Of Death’ I can die a happy man.
